Male Survivors of Rape and Sexual Abuse

The Wellington Rape Crisis Centre receives an increasing number of calls from or about men who have been raped or sexually abused. While this happens rarely in relation to the number of calls we get concerning women survivors, it needs to be recognised that men experience rape and sexual abuse too.

Because our Centre was set up by women for women and needs to be a place where women can feel safe, we do not provide face-to-face services for men. We believe that while similarities exist in the experiences of female and male survivors of rape and sexual abuse, there are also differences, and that service provision for male survivors is best met by other men who have knowledge and experience around issues for male survivors.

We do provide information and phone support to male survivors and males who are supporting women survivors, and are happy to provide them with any information, including referral options, if required.
